Brevard drops conference match-up against Anderson

BREVARD, N.C. – Despite another impressive performance by senior Madison Lenox (Raleigh, N.C.), the Brevard College Women’s basketball team (5-6, 1-6 SAC) fell to the Trojans of Anderson University (9-2, 6-1 SAC) 52-85 on Wednesday night.

Madison Lenox led the way for Brevard with 22 points and eight rebounds. The Raleigh native hit 10-19 from the field, and dished out four assists to end the night. Lynsey Crisp (Robbinsville, N.C.) was the only other Tornado to hit double-digits, as the senior finished with 13 points, hitting 4-8 from the field and 3-4 from the free-throw line.

The Trojans finished with a 45.8 field-goal percentage. Madison Baggett led the way for Anderson with 16 points. The freshman had an impressive outing, hitting a perfect 6-6 from the field, including 4-4 from three-point range. Bailey Sims and Erika Martin each added 11 points for the Trojans. Freshman Alexy Mollenhauer controlled the boards for the Trojans finishing with a game-high 13 rebounds.

Anderson got out to a fast start, going on a 13-2 run in the first five minutes of play. Lenox scored the first layup for the Tornados, before Anderson scored the next 11 points capped off by a Jasmine Raynor three-point shot.

Sophomore, AnnaLee Bollinger (Hickory, N.C.) broke up Anderson’s run with a three-point shot at the 4:10 mark in the first quarter.

Senior Lynsey Crisp added a layup in the final seconds, but Anderson held Brevard to single-digit points in the first 10-minutes of play, as the Trojans finished the first quarter with a 24-9 lead.

Bailey Sims put Anderson up by 17 in the opening seconds of the second quarter, before Crisp would sink to free-throws, putting Brevard within 15.

Anderson extended its lead to 25 at the mid-way point of the period as Jasmine Franklin scored a layup with 5:25 remaining.

Following a Brevard timeout at the five-minute mark, the blue and white would go on a 7-0 run, courtesy of Lenox. She scored back-to-back layups and added three points off of an assist by Bollinger.

The Tornados came out with a surge in the third quarter, shooting 66.7 percent from the field. Crisp got things started for Brevard with a shot from behind the arc to open up the second half of play.

Lenox and fellow senior Kyley Clark (Chapel Hill, N.C.) added the Tornados' next six points with layups. Clark finished the game with six points and came away with a steal. Lenox would put Brevard within 19 points of the Trojans at the midway point of the third quarter.

However, Anderson went on an 8-0 run as Madison Baggett came away with a steal and dribbled down the court to score a layup and put the Trojans ahead 65-38.

Jade Napier (Rockwood, Tenn.) closed out the scoring of the third quarter, as the junior added three points from the perimeter in the final minute.

Anderson controlled the final 10 minutes of play, as they outscored Brevard 20-10 in the fourth quarter.

Brevard will be on the road this weekend traveling to Catawba for a conference game on Saturday, Jan. 7, beginning at 2 p.m. The Tornados will return to Boshamer Gymnasium on Wednesday, Jan. 11, as they host Carson-Newman at 6 p.m. Senior Madison Lenox has been nominated for the DII Women’s Basketball HERO of the week.
