Lenox records seventh double-double in a 63-52 loss to Mars HillJanuary 18, 2017
MARS HILL, N.C. - Senior Madison Lenox (Raleigh, N.C.) scored a game-high 28 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, as the Brevard College Women’s Basketball team (5-10, 1-10 SAC) fell to Mars Hill (3-14, 1-10 SAC) in Wednesday night’s conference road game.
Lenox led the way for the Tornados, finishing 11-18 from the field and 5-6 from the free-throw line. The senior also came away with two steals and two blocked shots. Sophomore AnnaLee Bollinger (Hickory, N.C.) added 11 points in the contest and dished out three assists. Senior Lynsey Crisp (Robbinsville, N.C.) finished 3-5 from the field for seven total points.
The Lions were paced by Paige Chavis, who finished with 15 points, while recording a team-high five assists and came away with four steals. Jenny Edwards added 14 points to the Lions total, finishing 4-6 from the field and 6-8 from the foul line. Aliyah Farmer was one rebound short of a double-double, as the forward tallied 11 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
The opening quarter of play brought about five lead changes and two ties, as Mars Hill would have the slight advantage in the score at the end of the quarter with a 14-12 lead.
Lenox put the Tornados on the board first with a layup, after Kelsie Rhyne (Taylorsville, N.C.) came away with a steal. Mars Hill’s Madison Ervin connected from behind the arc on the next possession to give Lions their first three points of the contest.
Rhyne hit a three at the 6:43 mark to tie the game at 7-7. Bollinger added three points to her total, as she scored from behind the arc to give Brevard the 10-12 advantage with three-and-a-half minutes left in the first quarter.
Mars Hill scored back-to-back layups by Chavis and Edwards to close out the first ten minutes of play.
The Lions got off to a fast start in the second quarter, going ahead by seven before Lenox connected on a jumper. The Tornados got within three points as Crisp scored a three-pointer at the 6:08 mark off an assist from Kyley Clark (Chapel Hill, N.C.). Clark finished with a team-high four assists in the game.
The Lions entered halftime with a thirteen-point advantage, leading 35-22.
Brevard finished the third quarter shooting 50 percent from the field, with Lenox scoring all but three of Brevard’s 14 points in the quarter. Bollinger scored a three-pointer shot with 18 seconds left in the quarter, cutting Mars Hill’s lead to single digits to enter the final quarter of play.
Freshman Cienna Bryant (Roanoke, Va.) scored her only three points of the night to put Brevard with one point of Mars Hill with 7:43 remaining in regulation. This would be as close as Brevard would get, as Mars Hill pulled away in the final minutes of the game, as the Lions would hit 6 of 10 attempts from the foul line to win 63-52.
The Tornados will return to Boshamer Gymnasium this Saturday, as they host Lenoir-Rhyne in a conference doubleheader. The women will tip-off at 2 pm.
