Men's tennis soars past SIUMarch 5, 2017
HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Brevard College Men’s Tennis team improved to 3-8 on the season with a 7-2 dominating victory over Salem International University on Sunday. Sophomore Tom Mittring (Bavaria, Germany) showed off his talent at the No. 1 spot with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Landon Schultz-Zwahr in singles competition.
Mittring and JR Davis (Hixon, Tenn) gave Brevard its second win in doubles with an 8-5 win over Landon Schultz-Zwahr and Christian Manalang at the No. 1 spot. The win gave Brevard a 2-1 lead entering singles competition.
Tim Hengst (Menden, Germany) and Will Christiansen (Crawford, Miss.) earned the Tornados first win of the day with a dominating 8-0 win against Eugene Bour and Kevin Musasia at the No. 2 position. SIU won the No. 3 match due to a default.
Senior Christoph Plasa (Wegberg, Germany) captured the Tornados first win in the singles competition with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at the No. 5 spot. Mittring finished next with a pair of 6-0 wins.
JR Davis posted a 6-1, 6-3 match win against Christian Manalang at the No. 2 spot. While Hengst and Christiansen kept the momentum from their doubles competition going into the singles matches. Hengst defeated Eugene Bour 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 3 spot. Christiansen won 7-6 in set two to prevent a set three against Kevin Musasia to capture the win at the No. 4 position.
The Tornados will have a quick turnaround as they return to courts bright and early Monday morning. Brevard will battle Spring Arbor at 8:15 a.m. for day two of the Hilton Head Tournament.
