Tornados storm through weekend meet with Warren WilsonMarch 20, 2017
BREVARD, N.C. – Aided by eight top-five finishes, the Brevard College Cycling team road to an impressive finish in their first road meet of the 2017 season, this past Saturday and Sunday.
Saturday featured an 8:30 a.m. time trial followed by a criterium at the Brevard Music Center beginning at noon. The time trial course featured a three-mile climb for riders reaching an elevation of over 1,100 feet, while criterium was a fast paced circuit that took place around the music center.
On the women’s side of time trial racing, sophomore phenom Janelle Cole (Rockford, Mich.) and freshman Hannah Arensman (Valdese, N.C.) both turned in impressive finishes, as Cole finished fifth overall, while Arensman took home eighth-place honors in the women’s A individual time trial.
Freshman Carson Beckett (Benton, Ky.) captured gold in the men’s B individual time trial, while junior Walker Shaw (Hendersonville, N.C.), sophomore Zack Lowden (Cary, N.C.) and junior Trever Kingsbury (Petoskey, Mich.) each finished third, fifth and sixth-place, respectively.
In women’s A criterium racing, Arensman captured sixth-place honors, while in the men’s B race, Shaw finished second overall with Beckett taking home a fifth-place finish.
Sunday’s racing action was based off a points race criterium in Asheville, N.C. hosted by Warren Wilson College, where over the course of the event, riders and teams competed for intermediate sprints to accumulate points. With the riders with the most points at the end taking home the event title.
In the women’s A criterium, Arensman continued her dominating weekend as the true freshman finished second-place overall, while Kingsbury road to a fifth-place performance in the men’s B race.
Sunday also featured a rare event for the Tornados as head coach Brad Perley, sported his Tornados kit and partook in the racing festivities.
Brevard is scheduled to return back to the road this coming weekend Mar 25-26 as they travel to Atlanta, Ga. to battle Georgia Tech in preparations for Collegiate Road Nationals on Apr. 28-30.
