Brevard Climbing climbs their way to top of the Appalachian Regionals

CHATTANOOGA, TENN.- In just their first year as a competitive athletic team, the Brevard College Climbing Team took first place at the USA Climbing – Appalachian Regional Championship on Saturday.

Coach Travis could not be more proud of how his team performed throughout the season and credits the culmination of hard work each student-athlete put into training to reach their success.

“Since the very beginning of our season we have been training relentlessly for this competition,” said Coach Gray. “We have individuals who have been athletes before and some who have never participated in a sports team a day in their lives. Through their incredible resilience and love for one another, each of them has come into fruition as inspiring student athletes.”

Two Tornados placed on the podium in their respective disciplines on Saturday. Senior Lauren Fowler (Elijay, Ga.) kept her impressive campaign going with a second place finish in the Women’s Sport Climbing event. Fowler had back-to-back first place finishes in the Women’s intermediate competitions earlier in the season.

Jordan Haak (Longwood, Fla.) climbed his way to a third place spot on the podium in the Men’s Speed Climbing event.

The regional championship will wrap up the inaugural season for the Tornados’ Climbing team, but Coach Gray and his team are preparing for next season and will continue to build on the success of this season.

“Each of these student athletes have dedicated much of their time digging deep day in and day out within themselves, which has led to each of them becoming better rock climbers,” said Coach Gray. “Their commitment to our consistent fitness, conditioning, and training routines has helped them tremendously. Moreover, their commitment to each other and their no-quit attitudes is why they are currently USA Climbing Collegiate Appalachian Regional Champions. As their coach, I have seen them earn it everyday, and I could not be more proud of them in this monumental achievement.”
