Cole wins DI varsity individual national title, Arensman second

GRAND JUNCTION, COLO. – Sophomore Janelle Cole (Rockford, Mich.) captured the Division I Varsity Individual National Title in road Friday afternoon, adding to an already incredible resume for the Tornados.

“We are extremely proud of the efforts made today by Janelle and Hannah,” said head cycling coach Brad Perley. “Time trials are always extremely difficult, as you are racing entirely by yourself against the clock. Today's course was hilly, wide open, with extreme winds. They both displayed a tremendous amount of focus and their intense preparation leading up to the event shows in a huge way.”

In addition to Cole, freshman Hannah Arensman (Valdese, N.C.) finalized a freshman campaign that already includes two trips to compete for team USA overseas with a second-place ride, trailing only Cole for the top spot.

“I very much enjoyed today's course, made especially exciting by some high winds,” said Cole. “After today, I'm excited by the positive energy Hannah and I are carrying forward into the rest of Nationals. Being teammates on the podium is extremely special, especially as this is Brevard's first individual championship in D1.”

Cole and Arensman were the only two Tornados that competed in road nationals, but similar to mountain bike and cyclocross, Brevard left their mark felt on the competition, finishing one and two overall for the third time in a row.

"Being out there in Colorado with my teammate, Janelle Cole, taking the win and myself finishing second in the DI individual time trial has been a wonderful introduction to my first Collegiate Road Nationals," said Arensman. "The course was relatively flat and head-cross wind on the way out and a tail-wind on the way back. My goal was to put it all out there and stay focused and that is what I did. It is great to see that both of us are feeling strong going into the road race tomorrow."

The Tornados return back to action tomorrow as they look to bring home the gold yet again for the blue and white.
