Merrill, Warner drive home two each
Johnson City, Tenn. - The Brevard College Tornados dropped a pair of seven-inning games to Milligan College on Wednesday night, 5-3 and 4-3. The Tornados fall to 7-15 with the losses, while the Buffaloes improve to 21-8.
Game One - Milligan 5, Brevard 3 (7 inn.)
Brevard rallied for three runs in the 7th after entering the inning down 5-0, but Buffalo hurler Michael Dillow (Gray, Tenn.) struck out Stephen Mullis (Charlotte, N.C.) with two runners on to end the game. Dillow pitched the complete seven innings for the win, allowing seven hits while striking out a pair. In his first start of the season, Matthew Pruitt (Hendersonville, N.C.) took the loss for Brevard after allowing all five runs (three earned) in five innings of work.
Milligan pushed a run across in the 1st inning when Brian Busby's (Lexington, S.C.) fielder's choice scored Wesley Jones (Kingsport, Tenn.) to put a marker on the board.
The Buffaloes stampeded to four runs in the 4th inning. With two on and one out, Kendall Williams (Dillon, S.C.) delivered the big blow with a two-RBI triple. Williams scored on a Justin Motte (Johnson City, Tenn.) single, and Jones brought home another run with a base hit to put the home team up, 5-0.
Brevard's scoring came in the 7th. With one out, Jackie Corn (Hendersonville, N.C.) and Josh Miller (Hendersonville, N.C.) reached on back-to-back singles. Two batters later, Kellen Moman (Greenville, S.C.) brought home a Tornado run with a single, and two batters later, pinch hitter Jason Merrill (Hendersonville, N.C.) scored a pair with a base knock of his own. But Dillow came back to strike out Mullis to end the game.
Game Two - Milligan 4, Brevard 3 (7 inn.)
Trailing 3-2 heading into the bottom of the 7th, the Buffaloes scored twice for the walk-off win. Jones tied the game with an RBI single and scored the winning run after Oxley was hit by a Luke Smithson (Mills River, N.C.) offering with the bases loaded.
Jason Trivett (Bristol, Tenn.) pitched a scoreless 7th inning to pick up the win for Milligan, while Spencer Linn (Fletcher, N.C.) started and took the loss after pitching 6 2/3 fantastic innings. The senior struck out seven batters.
Brevard scored in the 1st inning when Corn doubled home Pruitt to make the score 1-0. But the Buffaloes tied the game in the inning's bottom half, when Oxley came up with a double that scored Jones.
Brevard's big inning came in the 5th. After Moman and William Scholer (Norwalk, Iowa) led off the frame with singles, Brice Warner (Clover, S.C.) singled and scored both to put the road nine up, 3-1. Milligan responded in the bottom half again, however, when a Jones sac fly scored Motte to bring the hosts within a run.
Pinch hitter Todd Caldwell (Johnson City, Tenn.) led off the 7th with a single and two batters later, with Jones at the plate, came home on a single to tie the game. Linn walked Spencer Street (Johnson City, Tenn.) and was replaced by Smithson, who walked Busby to load the bases. Oxley then took one for the team, allowing Jones to touch home and secure Milligan's sweep.
The Tornados return to South Atlantic Conference play on Saturday with a noon doubleheader against Lenoir-Rhyne. Milligan plays at King College on Saturday, a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
