Fisher clinches win as Brevard evens SAC record
Brevard, N.C. – Victory returned to the courts of Brevard on Monday afternoon as the Tornado men’s tennis team won a tight battle over visiting Newberry College, 5-4. Jarred Fisher won at both singles and doubles for Brevard, with his individual victory clinching the match.
Two of three doubles points went the home team’s way. At No. 1, Jeremy Smith and Felipe Sobrinho won a point for Newberry (2-6, 1-2 SAC) with a 9-8 (7-1) win over Konstantin Savelyev and Cole Altizer. In the second flight, however, Fisher and Heikki Riikonen beat Lucas Mattos and Maxim Sukharev, 8-6, and at No. 3 Andrew Thompson and Nate Lyles bested Pavle Popovic and Mark Boswell, 8-3.
Brevard (12-3, 3-3 SAC) lost the top three flights in singles but won the bottom three and the match. Savelyev retired in his match with Sukharev, trailing 5-2 in the opening set, Riikonen dropped a close one to Mattos at No. 2, 1-6, 6-3, 10-7, and Altizer fell to Smith in the third round, 6-3, 0-6, 6-3.
Courts 4-6 went Brevard’s way. Fisher beat Sobrinho, 6-1, 6-2, Thompson got past Popovic, 6-2, 6-1, and Shane Apps drilled Boswell, 6-1, 6-0. Thompson’s win pushed Brevard to the brink of victory, and Fisher’s triumph was the fifth and clinching point.
The Tornados head back to the court Friday for a 3 p.m. home match with Lenoir-Rhyne. Newberry plays at Georgia College & State Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.
