Hamilton's team prepares for Spring Game on April 18
Brevard, N.C. – The sun was shining and excitement was in the air as Coach Paul Hamilton and the Brevard College football team began spring practice Monday afternoon. Spirits were high as the Tornados set forth to improve in their second season as South Atlantic Conference members.
The Tornados return twenty-two players who saw action as a starter in 2008, and competition is high for available spots in the line-up. One of the biggest position battles is at quarterback, where newcomer Michael Crumbaker will battle returning players Braden Theobald, Matt Rowe and Zac Halbert for the job. None of the four have taken snaps under center as a Tornado.
“I am really pleased with what we saw after the first day of practice,” Assistant Head Coach Jerry Mynatt said. “We are already a much improved team over last season. The key is to get better every day and to keep that enthusiasm that we have.”
On the defensive side of the ball, Coordinator Scott Brumett was thrilled with his squad’s effort and excited about the challenges in front of the team. “Everyone was flying around today, just happy to be back on the field,” Brumett commented after drills. “We have a lot of guys in new positions; every spot is wide open.”
Several Tornado coaches commented on the improvements made in strength and conditioning during the offseason. “Credit has to go to Coach Josh Miller for doing a great job with our offseason weight training program,” said Director of Football Operations Michael Bayne. “Our guys are bigger, faster and stronger than they have ever been.”
The Tornados will conclude spring practice with the 2009 Spring Football Game, to be held Saturday, April 18, at 6 p.m. at Brevard Memorial Stadium. Premier Spring Game tickets, which includes admission to the $1000 restaurant gift card giveaway dinner, are $25. To purchase tickets or for more information, fans can call (828) 884-8276. Game-only tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the stadium the day of the game.
