Tornados drop two slugfests to Carson-Newman, 9-8 and 12-9April 4, 2009
Dozier, Scholer belt homers for BC
Jefferson City, Tenn. - The Brevard College baseball team lost a pair of games to Carson-Newman College Saturday afternoon, losing 9-8 and 12-9 at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex. The Eagles improve to 20-16 (5-10 South Atlantic Conference) with the win, while Brevard is now 8-24 (2-15 SAC).
Game One - Carson-Newman 9, Brevard 8
The Eagles built an 8-4 lead after three innings, only to see the advantage whittled to 9-8 with Tornados on first and third with two out in the 9th. But Chase Boruff (Knoxville, Tenn.) retired Jackie Corn (Hendersonville, N.C.) on a groundout to preserve the win for the home nine.
Boruff picked up his first save, while D.J. Ferguson (1-0; Jupiter, Fla.) picked up the win with three perfect innings of relief. Ryan Toney (1-6; Johnson City, Tenn.) took the loss for Brevard.
The Eagles put up a two-spot in the 1st to take an early lead, but Brevard came back with four runs in the second. In his first at-bat since returning from a broken hand, Matthew Pruitt (Hendersonville, N.C.) doubled home a run to put the Tornados on the board. The next batter, M.A. Dozier (Cumming, Ga.) smacked a three-run homer to put the Tornados up, 4-2.
Carson-Newman retook the lead with three runs in the bottom of the 2nd and built the 8-3 lead with a three-run shot from Evan Patterson (Knoxville, Tenn.) in the 3rd.
The Tornados cut into lead with a pair of runs in the 8th, on an RBI single from Corn and a run-scoring groundout from Jason Merrill (Hendersonville, N.C.). Carson-Newman added an insurance run that ultimately loomed large in the bottom of the 8th, as Tyler Kitts (Knoxville, Tenn.) came home on a Tornado error, making the score 9-6.
Two more Tornados came home in the 9th, as Brice Warner (Clover, N.C.) singled home a pair to slice the lead to 9-8. But Ferguson held the Tornados at bay and did not give up the lead.
Game Two - Carson Newman 12, Brevard 9 (7 inn.)
The Eagles scored in every inning but had to hold off a furious Brevard rally in the 7th for a 12-9 win. Justin Higdon (3-5; Ooltewah, Tenn.) pitched 4 2/3 innings for the win, while Shane Galloway (2-5; Rosman, N.C.) was saddled with the loss for Brevard.
Five Eagles scored in the 1st inning, on seven hits. The big shot was a two-run homer from Wesley Dozier (Cornelius, N.C.). The home side scored two more in the 2nd, a run in the 3rd, and two in the 4th to build a 10-0 lead.
The Tornados came back with four markers in the 5th. Dozier brought home a run with a groundout, Warner came through with a sac fly, and William Scholer (Norwalk, Iowa) crushed a two-run home run to make the score 10-4.
Down 12-4 heading into the 7th and final frame, Brevard made life difficult for the Eagles, scoring five runs. Corn had the first RBI, getting hit by a pitch with the bases juiced. Pinch hitters Michael Calhoun (Florence, S.C.) and Jared McCall (Brevard, N.C.) each brought a run home, the former with a single and the latter with a groundout, to make the score 12-7. Kellen Moman (Greenville, S.C.) and Pruitt followed with RBI singles of their own to make the score 12-9, but the Tornados would score no more, falling by three runs.
Eight different Eagles had an RBI in the second game, including two each for Dozier and Patterson, while Moman and Pruitt each has two hits for Brevard.
The Eagles and Tornados will finish their series Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m., when they do battle at Smokies Park in Knoxville, Tenn.
