Win is second this season over nationally-ranked team
Brevard, N.C. - The Brevard College men's tennis team dropped a nationally-ranked giant once again Saturday, beating No. 36 Tusculum, 5-4, at the Brevard Tennis Courts. The Tornados are now 2-1 this season over nationally-ranked teams, having beaten then-No. 36 Queens on February 21, 5-4.
Brevard improves to 14-3 (5-3 SAC) with the win, while the Pioneers fall to 9-8 (3-4 SAC).
Two of three points in pairs action went Brevard's way. Cole Altizer and Konstantin Savelyev beat Thomas Rees and Drew Kiser, 8-6 at the top spot, but Tusculum came back with a win at No. 2, with Leo Guaycurus and Henrique Rodrigues beating Jarred Fisher and Heikki Riikonen, 9-8. The Tornados won in the third flight, as Andrew Thompson and Nate Lyles beat Hunter Beal and Steven Lin, 9-7.
In top flight singles, Rees beat Savelyev, 6-1, 6-0, but on the second court Riikonen drilled Rodrigues, 7-5, 6-0. At No. 3, Altizer handled Beal with few problems, 6-2, 6-4, and Fisher clinched with three-set triumph over Guaycurus, 6-0, 4-6, 6-4. Tusculum won the points on courts five and six, with Lin beating Thompson, 7-5, 7-6 and Kiser downing Shane Apps, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4.
The clinching singles with is the fifth of the season for Fisher.
The Tornados are back in action Monday, when they host UNC Ashville at 2:30 p.m. Tusculum faces Lees-McRae Sunday at 1 p.m.
