Box Score

Knoxville, Tenn. – The Brevard College Tornados dropped the third game of their South Atlantic Conference series with Carson-Newman College, 7-5, Sunday afternoon at Smokies Park. With the win, the Eagles (21-16, 6-10 SAC) complete the weekend sweep of the visiting Tornados.

Robby Thigpen (3-1; St. Petersburg, Fla.) picked up the win for the Eagles, allowing three runs in four innings of work, while Corbin Arial (Elgin, S.C.) picked up the save, his fifth of the season, after recording the final seven outs of the game without allowing a hit. Seth Laughter (2-5; Fletcher, N.C.) took the loss for Brevard (8-23, 2-16 SAC), giving up seven runs in 7 1/3 innings.

Mills Rogers (Simpsonville, S.C.) was 2-2 with a home run for Carson-Newman, while Jackie Corn (Hendersonville, N.C.) was 3-4 and scored three times for the Tornados, while Matthew Pruitt (Hendersonville, N.C.) and M.A. Dozier each tallied two RBIs.

As they did in the first two games of the series, the Eagles touched up the scoreboard in the very first inning, scoring twice, and took a 3-0 lead into the 4th inning but the Tornados climbed back into the game with two runs in the frame. With the bases loaded and two out, Dozier smacked a two-run double down the left field line to cut the deficit to a single run.

The Tornados were down 5-2 going into the 5th when they scored two more times. This time it was Pruitt who came through with a double to centerfield, plating a pair to make the score 5-4 Eagles.

After Rogers homered in the bottom of the 5th to stretch the Eagle lead to 6-4, Brevard again narrowed the gap in the 7th. Josh Miller (Hendersonville, N.C.), the hero from Tuesday’s win over Mars Hill, drew a two-out bases loaded walk to make the score 6-5, but Arial came on a retired Vance Crook (West Union, S.C.) to end the inning and preserve the lead.

The Eagles added an insurance run in the 8th on an Evan Patterson (Knoxville, Tenn.) RBI double then turned the keys over to Arial, who maintained the lead.

The Tornados head home Tuesday for a 3 p.m. game against Erskine, while the Eagles host North Greenville in a doubleheader Wednesday at 2 p.m.
