Tornados upset Tusculum, 5-2, advance to SAC Championship
All-SAC honoree Dixon clinches historic win
Rock Hill, S.C. – The fourth-seeded Tornados of Brevard College upset top-seeded Tusculum, 5-2, Friday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the 2009 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Women’s Tennis Tournament. With the win, Paul Thomson’s team becomes the first BC squad to make the championship match of a SAC Tournament.
The Tornados took two of three points in doubles. First team All-SAC members Lindsay Shaeffer and Kim Dixon combined for an 8-4 win over Carolina Crowe and Katelyn Doss in the top flight, while Lindsay Hostetter and Kayley Duval beat Amanda Pike and Jennifer Sparks, 8-5, on court two. The only Pioneer pairs point came at No. 3, where Heidi von der Lage and Jessi Smith took down Merek Slagle and Sara Douglas, 8-6.
In singles, Brevard scored a victory on court one when Shaeffer waltzed past Sparks, 6-0, 6-2, while Tusculum came back with a win on court two when Doss beat Hostetter, 6-4, 7-5. Duval beat Pike on court three when the Pioneer retired down 5-2 in the first set, and Dixon clinched the match for Brevard with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over von der Lage.
With Dixon’s clinching win, the match between Jennifer Nyman and Crowe was halted, as was the duel between Douglas and Blake Thompson.
The Tornados face Carson-Newman Saturday at noon in the Championship match of the tournament.
