Carson-Newman tops Brevard, 5-2, for SAC Tournament Championship
Shaeffer scores Brevard's singles point, besting SAC's top player
Rock Hill, S.C. - The Brevard College women's team fell in the Championship match of the 2009 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Women's Tennis Tournament, 5-2, Saturday afternoon to Carson-Newman College. The SAC title is the first for the Lady Eagles in program history.
Carson-Newman, seeded second in the tournament, took two of three doubles points from fourth-seeded Brevard. Amanda Bartlett and Taryn Cappadonna defeated Lindsay Shaeffer and Kim Dixon in the top spot, 8-4, But Brevard's Lindsay Hostetter and Kayley Duval won the second match, 8-2, over Elizabeth Sneed and Cassie Moulton. Carson-Newman took the third court to assume the lead, with Emily Sorah and Kylie Elliott topping Sara Douglas and Merek Slagle, 8-1.
In singles, Shaeffer beat SAC Player of the Year Bartlett in the top flight, 6-4, 6-4, but the Lady Eagles won the final three completed individual duels. Cappadonna beat Dixon in the fourth flight, 6-2, 7-5, while Cassie Moulton got past Douglas in the sixth, 6-0, 6-4.
The clinching point for Carson-Newman came on the second court, where Sneed beat Hostetter, 6-3, 6-4. With the fifth point in hand, the match between Duval and Elliott on court three was halted, as was the fifth flight match featuring Jennifer Nyman and Sorah.
With the victory, Carson-Newman claims the SAC's automatic birth in the NCAA Division II National Tournament, while the Tornados will hope for an at-large tournament bid.
