Tornados storm down to Jacksonville for season openerAugust 26, 2009
Brevard will face Edward Waters at 5 p.m. at Earl Kitching Stadium
Brevard, N.C. - The Brevard College football team wrapped up preseason last weekend with the Blue-White Scrimmage at Rosman High School, and has begun to focus its sight on the upcoming 2009 season opener this Saturday night as the Tornados head down to Jacksonville, Fla. to take on Edward Waters College at 5 p.m.
Saturday’s gridiron contest will be the first meeting between Brevard and Edward Waters, as both teams have recently reinstated their football programs after taking a combined 85 year hiatus from play. Brevard begins their fourth season in existence since being reinstated, while the Tigers, who were reinstated in 2001, begin their ninth season.
The Brevard College Tornados battled their way through their first season as full members of the South Atlantic Conference and NCAA Division II last year, finishing with a 1-9 season. Head Coach Paul Hamilton aims to build on the veterans of this team as the Tornados graduate their first four-year class from the football team. With 25 seniors on the gridiron gang this year, and 19 starters returning, the Tornados look to improve on their record from last season as they move into their second season in conference play.
Headlining this four-year class are linebackers Stanley Jones and Brandon Rawls. Jones, the tackles per game leader in the SAC last season with 9.8 per game, and Rawls, who led the team in tackles per loss with 5.5 and sacks with three, are preseason 1st Team All-SAC members, the first BC football players to be honored on the preseason team.
The Tornados are excited about this upcoming season, having worked a full year under strength coach Josh Miller and with a number of young returning players pushing to get on the field, the Tornados have built a strong base as Brevard College moves to fight their way into the top of the South Atlantic Conference.
This season will be Coach Paul Hamilton’s third year as coach of the Tornados football team, having compiled a 3-18 record in his two seasons with the Tornados. Brevard’s last win came on Sept. 6 at home against Pikeville.
The Tornados will have a new face under center this season as Michael Crumbaker takes over the reins. Crumbaker comes into Brevard from Feather River College where he threw for 821 yards and eight touchdowns, while rushing for 507 yards and seven more TDs.
Other offensive standouts for the Tornados include RB Neville Bryce, who also comes from Feather River, where he rushed for 1,314 yards and 15 touchdowns last season for the Eagles. Slot Shaton Pratt, wide receiver Cory Pertz and tight end Curtis Lorenz also all return for the Tornados offense.
Defensively, Brevard returns the 2008 South Atlantic Conference’s leader in tackles per game in Stanley Jones (9.8 tpg). Jones was joined on the preseason All-SAC team by fellow linebacker Brandon Rawls (62 tackles, 3.0 sacks) and safety Michael Gist (58 tackles, 3 INTs) to headline a talented group under defensive coordinator Scott Brumett.
BC’s offensive unit will be directed by head coach Paul Hamilton.
The kickoff time is slated for 5 p.m. at Earl Kitching Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla.
