Tornados top Flying Fleet 3-1
Brevard, N.C. - Renato Barbosa and Craig Galloway scored their first career goals while Chris Lanvik-Larsen added his third on the year and an assist en route to a 3-1 victory over Erskine.
The Tornados picked up their first win to improve to 1-4 while Erskine fell to 0-3-1.
Barbosa scored ten minutes into the game. He and Lanvik-Larsen passed the ball up the field until Lanvik-Larsen was finally able to cross a pass in front of Erskine’s goalkeeper, Devon Braykovich, so Barbosa could take an open shot with Braykovich off balanced.
With 27:36 on the clock, the Tornados and the Flying Fleet were forced to leave the field due to lightening. When the game resumed an hour and a half later, Craig Galloway rocketed a shot from 30-yards out for his first career goal.
Tornados goalkeeper, Jack Shaw, allowed the only Erskine goal with ten minutes remaining in the first period when Eric Moxley scored.
Shaw saved six of the seven shots on goal that he faced, many times coming out of the net and out hustling Erskine to the ball.
The Flying Fleet came out strong in the second period threatening to tie the game, but Craig Galloway’s slide tackle just outside of the box prevented them from scoring just 3:00 into the period.
Minutes later Douglas Neil made back to back defensive plays to protect Shaw and keep the Flying Fleet from scoring off of corner kicks.
The Tornados added cushion in the 88th minute when freshman, Landvik-Larsen added his third goal of the year.
The Tornados travel to Rock Hill S.C. on Friday, September to play their second Division I opponent of the year in Winthrop. They return home again on Wednesday, September 16 for their first conference game against Lenoir-Rhyne.
