Jones recorded 16 tackles, three for loss as well as two sacks in Tornados 27-24 win over Chowan
Rock Hill, S.C. - Brevard College Linebacker Stanley Jones was named the South Atlantic Conference Defensive Football Player of the Week this morning, as announced by the South Atlantic Conference headquarters located in Rock Hill, S.C. Jones is the first BC football player to receive the SAC Player of the Week recognition.
Jones a senior from Spartanburg, S.C.(Spartanburg HS) led the way for the defense, as he posted a team-high 16 total tackles in the Tornados 27-24 win over Chowan in the Brevard home opener on Saturday afternoon. Jones also recorded three tackles for a loss and was a part of three sacks in the game as the Tornados dropped Hawks quarterback C.J. Westler a school-record nine times in the game.
Jones leads the SAC in tackles on the season. He led the conference in tackles per game last season with 9.8 and was a first team preseason All-Conference selection.
Mars Hill College running back Jonas Randolph was named Offensive Player of the Week; Brevard College linebacker Stanley Jones was named Defensive Player of the Week; and Mars Hill wide receiver Demetrius Smedley was named Special Teams Player of the Week.
Randolph, a sophomore running back from Daleville, Ala. (Daleville HS), rushed for 216 yards and two scores and set a new school record for most rushing attempts in a game with 43. The old record was held by Travis McFadden who rushed 39 times against Presbyterian College in 2001.
Smedley, a freshmanm from Decatur, Ga. (S.W. Dekalb HS) blocked a punt, then chased the loose ball 38 yards to recover it in the Falcons endzone for Mars Hill's second score of the game. He then scored on a PAT rush to put MHC up for good 20-14 and seal a Lion home opening victory.
