Brevard, N.C. - Becky Thompson scored a goal and added an assist for the Railsplitters, while the Tornados’ leading scorers, Bailey Varley and Allie Hovis both scored, bringing the team back from a 0-2 deficit. However, a late Lincoln Memorial goal put Brevard on the losing end 3-2.
Lincoln Memorial improved to 4-1-2 and 1-0 in the conference, as Brevard falls to 4-4 and 0-2 in conference play.
The Railsplitters scored two goals in the first half, the first coming from Thomson when she found the ball after a Sydney Douglas save, and knocked one past the off balance goalkeeper at 26:51. The team’s second goal came just two minutes later when Thompson connected with Sarah Taylor to make the score 2-0.
A minute later Allie Hovis hurried the ball up the field, twisting up defenders and knocking the ball past the outreached arms of the goalkeeper, Sarah Thompson for the Tornados first goal.
Brevard tied the game twenty minutes into the second half when Danielle Burch’s shot bounced to Bailey Varley who crossed the ball into the net knotting the game 2-2.
The Tornados defense held the Railsplitters off the board for the majority of the second half. Kayla Yingst’s sliding tackle in front of the box preserved the tie early in the half, then minutes later, Douglas came twenty yards out of the net, stopping the Railsplitters’ attack.
Despite the Tornados good defense, they were unable to hold on, as Karen Boleska scored the game decider with six minutes remaining in the game for LMU.
Douglas, saved six of the Railsplitters nine shots on goal, while Sarah Thompson saved two of the Tornados four shots on goal.
The Tornados return to action for another conference match on Wednesday, September 23, at Newberry.
