Tornados take down Queens, 3-0
Seaman has 10 kills and seven blocks in win
Brevard, N.C. - The Tornados continued their non-conference winning streak, making it four games in a row Friday evening against the visiting Queens University of Charlotte Royals, with a straight set win, 25-23, 25-17 and 25-19.
With the win, Brevard improves to 8-4 on the season, while the Royals fall to 5-10.
Brooke Seaman led the Tornados in the match, recording 10 kills while hitting 37.5% from the floor. Jordei Osby added six kills to the attack, while Jamie Atkinson and Ashlie Morrison each contributed with five.
The Tornados had 24 set assists for the match as Bethany Stevenson and Lindsey Rogers each had 12.
On the defensive side, Chelsey Trojan recorded a match-high eight digs, while Rebecca Schoonover and Rogers each had six. At the net, Seaman had seven total blocks, with four of them coming in combination with Atkinson.
For the Royals, Brittany Harvey led all hitters with 12 kills, hitting 38.5%. Tori Hernandez added eight kills to the attack to go with four block assists.
Erin Moore directed the attack with 29 set assists, while Allison Williams patrolled the backline for the Royals with eight digs.
The first game went back and forth for the first 30 points as the teams were deadlocked in a 15-15 battle.
Queens made a 5-0 run to go up 20-15 on Tanisha Lea’s serve as she hammered home an ace and was assisted by kills from Caitlin Hays and Moore.
The Tornados roared back with a run of their own, tying the game up at 21 as Cori Emory placed an ace in-between four Royals.
Following a service error by Queens’ Audrey Hurd, the Tornados put the last two points of the game in on kills by Morrison and Emory to give Brevard the early advantage, 25-23.
The Tornados rode the momentum from game one into game two, opening up with a 12-4 lead as Osby put in three kills and Atkinson added a pair.
The Royals were able to bring the game back within seven points on two different occasions, but a block by Seaman and Stevenson and Harvey’s attack ended game two in favor of the hosts, 25-17.
Queens fired back in the third set, going on a 6-0 run after the teams were tied 6-6 as Hays put in an ace and Hernandez teamed up with both Harvey and Moore on separate occasions to record blocks.
Brevard rallied back with a 15-3 run of their own to go up 21-15 as Brooke Seaman recorded four kills as the Tornados turned the game over to their Preseason 1st Team All-Conference middle hitter.
With Queens attempting to rally back, Morrison recorded the final two kills of the game, clinching the match for the Tornados, 25-19.
Brevard is back in South Atlantic Conference action tomorrow afternoon as they travel to Salisbury, N.C. to take on Catawba. First serve is set for 3 p.m. Queens travels home to Charlotte, N.C. to host Limestone College with game time slated for 11 a.m.
