Tornados fall to Carson-Newman, 3-0
Osby has 11 kills and two blocks in loss
Brevard, N.C. - Jordei Osby had a season-high 11 kills to go with two blocks and Chelsea Larsen added 10 kills of her own, but the Tornados fell in straight sets to Carson-Newman, 25-10, 25-20 and 25-23.
With the loss, Brevard falls to 10-6 on the season, 1-5 in South Atlantic Conference matches, while Carson-Newman improves to 11-5, 4-1 in conference play.
Ashlie Morrison added seven kills of her own to the match, while Brevard’s preseason All-SAC selection Brooke Seaman had six sills and two blocks.
Bethany Stevenson set up the Brevard attack in the game with 26 assists, while Rebecca Schoonover and Lindsey Rogers both had great receiving games, with Schoonover having her third game this week with over 20 digs, making 21 on the afternoon, while Rogers added 12.
The Lady Eagles were led by Jasmine Clark on the afternoon with 15 kills, hitting 50.0%, while Katie Troyer and Jessica Schachleiter each recorded double-digit kill games with 13 and 11 respectively.
Stephanie Cutter handled the setting duties for Carson-Newman for the afternoon, racking up 39 assists, while Angelle Hayes tied Schoonover with a game-high 21 digs in the contest.
The Tornados and Eagles traded points in the first set with neither team really able to take advantage until a kill by Troyer led to a 3-0 run to give C-N the lead at 11-7.
Brevard was able to nibble the rest of the way throughout the first game as Larsen, Osby and Morrison kept the game within four, but Clark put away the first set, 25-19.
The second set was again close early as Morrison and Osby kept the Tornados tied early, 7-7.
From there, Carson-Newman went on an extended run, using a 12-5 spurt on kills by Clark and Troyer to go up 19-12.
A late rally by the Tornados as Stevenson fired in a service ace to put the game back within four at 22-18, but Troyer closed out the set off the assist by Troyer, 25-20.
Game three opened up with a pair of runs as Carson-Newman opened the frame with a 10-4 run capped off by an ace by MacKenzie Tyree.
Coach Skeffington’s squad continued to fight back, bringing the game back within two at 15-13 on a service ace by Schoonover.
The Tornados completed the comeback, tying up the game on Chelsey Trojan’s serve at 21.
Brevard tied the game up twice more at 22 and 23, but the Lady Eagles were able to eke the game out on Clark’s kill to take the win, 25-23.
Brevard is back in action on Wednesday, October 7th, as they continue their five game homestand against Montreat College. First serve for the game in Boshamer Gymnasium is set for 7 p.m.
