Soccer teams put on clinic for youth team

Brevard, N.C. - The Brevard soccer student-athletes took time out of their busy schedules on Monday to give back to the community and put on a soccer clinic at the Recreation Department. The local youth of the TYSA Crush U12 co-ed team participated in the clinic that included drills and individual instruction by the Tornado players. This is the second year Brevard College has participated in the clinic with Coach Rob McNiel’s squad.

“It was outstanding,” said McNeil “Forty plus BC scholar athletes along with Coach’s Mascaro and Shinohara, coaching and scrimmaging our U12 Challenge (travel) team from TYSA. The BC men and women practiced individual and team skills with our kids. The scrimmage, was a huge hit. I think the women’s team won the scrimmage on PK’s, due to some questionable misses from the men’s team. Hats off and thanks to BC players for the team support.”

In addition to coaching soccer skills, the Tornados emphasized the importance of academics as well.

Coach McNiel commented on the BC student-athletes, “One of our parent educators, queried the group on academics and GPA’s. Definitely Scholar athletes given the responses.”

Sammy Kicklighter, a parent of one of the participants, was also grateful that the Tornados teams took time out to get involved with the community youth.

“Coach Mascaro should be commended for his vision in incorporating BC students into the fabric of our community,” said Kicklighter. “The BC players were absolutely very gracious and most friendly in their interaction with the TYSA Challenge players. Both teams came out with such a community spirit. It has elevated BC posture in the minds of our parents and coaches of the TYSA Challenge team. "
