Tornados must win on Friday to reach SAC tournament
Greeneville, Tenn. - Jamie Atkinson drilled home the last two points for the Tornados as Brevard took home the win over the host Lady Pioneers on Tuesday night, 26-24, 16-25, 25-23 and 25-14.
Brooke Seaman led the way for Brevard (13-14, 2-13 SAC) with 17 kills on the evening, connecting on 32.5 percent of her attacks, while Chelsea Larsen accumulated the double-double on the evening with 13 kills and led all players with 17 digs.
Atkinson added eight kills and four blocks to the attack, while Bethany Stevenson set a season-high with 46 assists in the match to go with nine digs. Rebecca Schoonover also recorded a double-digit dig effort with 12 as the Tornados won their second conference match of the season.
Tusculum (17-13, 8-8 SAC) was led by Gina Coffaro and Carly Swisher who each recorded 17 kills in the match.
Holli Cadenhead led the Lady Pioneers with 16 digs, while Bailee Price (15), Peyton Colclough (11) and Coffaro (11) also achieved double-digits.
Tusculum used an early 9-1 run to go up on the Tornados in the first set, 11-5 behind a pair of kills by Alyssa Raterman, but Brevard came back, tying the game up at 12 as Jordei Osby drove home three straight kills.
A service ace by Cori Emory gave the Tornados the lead at 13-12 and neither team would be able to achieve more than a two-point lead before the Tornados tied the game up at 24 after a ball handling error by TC’s Melanie Gibson and Seaman capitalized, slamming the next two points to the ground to give Brevard the 1-0 lead.
Coffaro was able to lead Tusculum to the 1-1 tie as the senior recorded five kills in the match, including the last four Lady Pioneers points in knotting up the score.
The Tornados broke a 15-15 deadlock in the third set with a 7-1 run as Seaman had an ace and a kill and Larsen bookended the run with a kill to give Brevard the 22-16 lead.
Tusculum brought the game back to within one after a Seaman attack error, but a service ace by Larsen closed out the match in favor of the guests to give the Tornados the 2-1 lead.
Brevard rode the momentum from the third set to go up 6-0 at the beginning of set four and the lead was extended to 20-9 in the match after a 7-0 run sparked by a pair of kills by Seaman, before Atkinson put the game away with the final two points to clinch the win.
The Tornados conclude the South Atlantic Conference regular season with a playoff berth on the line as they travel to take on Mars Hill College on Friday, November 6th. Whoever wins the match will be the eighth seed in the 2009 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference volleyball tournament. First serve between the Tornados and the Lions is set for 7 p.m.
