Whitson has first double-double of season in loss
Evansville, Ind. - Josh Roper broke the 20-point mark for the third game in a row, scoring 22 against the 10th-NABC ranked Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles and Jonathan Whitson recorded his first double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds, but 12 Southern Indiana players scored in the contest as the Tornados fell, 106-61.
Brevard (5-3, 1-0 SAC) shot 37.7 percent (23-61) from the floor, led by Roper who went 8-19 on his attempts in scoring 22 points. Roper added five assists and four rebounds in the contest, while Whitson shot 6-15 from the floor and blocked three shots for the Tornados. Shane Galloway, in his first start of the season, scored 11 for the Tornados, connecting twice from behind the arc as well as pulled down three rebounds as Brevard fell for just the third time this season.
Southern Indiana (11-0, 2-0 GLVC) had four players achieve double-figures in scoring led by Jamar Smith with a game-high 23 points on 8-14 shooting, connecting on seven three-pointers in the game. Tyrone Bradshaw added 15 points and seven blocks, while Jeron Lewis and C.J. Trotter each had 10 points as the Screaming Eagles connected on 55.1 percent (38-69) of their field goal attempts and 51.5 percent (17-33) of their attempts from behind the arc in building a 25-point halftime lead.
Southern Indiana opened the game on a 9-0 run before a layup by Roper gave the Tornados their first points at the 17:51 mark. A three-pointer by Drew Schauss cut the lead to 9-5 at 17:02 before the Screaming Eagles went on another 9-0 run started on a three-pointer by Kevin Gant, before Shane Galloway connected from behind the arc to put the score at 18-8 with 15:08 to go in the half.
Brevard cut into the lead again, bringing it back to 10 at 30-20 as Roper connected on a jumper and made the additional free throw shot off the foul by Lewis with 10:17 remaining in the opening period, but Southern Indiana closed out the first half with a 25-10 run to put the score at 55-30 as the teams went into the locker room.
Roper had five of the Tornados first seven points in the second half coming on a combination of layups and free throw shots as Brevard cut the lead down to 22 points with 17:34 remaining in the game at 59-37, but Southern Indiana turned to the bench as twelve players scored in the contest as the Screaming Eagles finished the game with the win, 106-61.
The Tornados are back in action on Wednesday, December 30th, as Brevard travels to Oakland City, Ind. to take on the Oakland City Fighting Oaks. Tipoff between the teams inside the Johnson Center is set for 7 p.m.
