Tornados bench carries Brevard past Montreat, 95-83January 4, 2010
Bench combines for 40 points in Brevard's third straight win
Montreat, N.C. - Jonathan Whitson led four Tornados in double-figures with 25 points as Brevard withstood a late three-point barrage by the Cavaliers in leaving McAlister Gymnasium on Monday night with the 95-83 win.
Brevard (8-3) was led by the senior forward from Clyde, N.C. as Whitson went 8-11 from the floor and narrowly missed out on his fourth straight double-double with nine rebounds. Shane Galloway came off the bench for the Tornados firing in the first half, connecting on four three-pointers in finishing with 18 points, while pulling down seven rebounds. Drew Schauss added 14 poins off the bench and Sam Carlisle had 14 points and two blocked shots in 17 minutes as the Tornados won their third straight game since falling to Southern Indiana.
Josh Roper added nine rebounds and four assists and Cody Siniard had six assists for the Tornados as Brevard shot 51.6 percent (32-62) from the floor in the game. The Tornados out-rebounded the Cavaliers 41-30 and dished out 23 assists as the Tornados bench scored 40 points in the game.
Montreat (2-13) was led by Matt Rushing with 21 points, connecting on three three-pointers while pulling down five rebounds and dishing out five assists. Vincent Dombrowski added 18 points on the back of five three-pointers as the Cavaliers went 13-31 (41.9 percent) from behind the arc in the game. Kevin Hanlon added 10 points and four rebounds from the bench for Montreat in the loss.
Rushing opened up the game for the Cavaliers with eight of the first 14 points in the contest, leading host Montreat to a 10-4 lead in the first two minutes of the game. The Tornados came back and tied the game at 10 apiece as Dellinger, Roper and Dovonou each drove in for layups to tie the game with 15:55 left in the first half. The score remained tied for the next eight minutes as the teams tied six times in the first half with the last coming at 23-23 as Kevin Hanlon connected from behind the arc for the Cavaliers at the 7:56 mark.
The Tornados came out of the tie with a three-pointer by Shane Galloway as the senior forward connected from the top of the key off the assist from Cody Siniard to put the score at 26-23. Drew Schauss added a three-pointer to the mix as the Tornados went up by eight with 43 seconds to play in the opening period at 44-36. A jumper in the short right corner by Montreat’s Kevin Hanlon with 32 seconds remaining cut the deficit back to six. Holding the ball for the last shot, Roper drove to the basket before kicking it out to a wide-open Shane Galloway who rattled the ball in from behind the arc as time expired for his third three-pointer of the first half as the Tornados went into the locker room with the 47-38 lead.
Brevard built an 18 point lead throughout the second half, going up 88-70 on Sam Carlisle’s layup with 4:38 to go before the Cavaliers went on a tear, scoring 10 unanswered points by Rushing and Dombrowski to cut the deficit to 88-80 with 2:49 on the clock. The lead was trimmed down to seven less than a minute later as Dombrowski connected on another shot from behind the arc as the Tornados held the 90-83 lead with 2:11 to play.
Whitson came up with a pair of key defensive stops on the next Montreat possessions, blocking Seth Moore’s layup and knocking Dombrowski’s three-point attempt into the hands of Roper and Cody Siniard and Dellinger knocked down free throws to seal the Tornados win, 95-83.
Brevard returns to South Atlantic Conference play on Wednesday, January 6th, as the Tornados host Lenoir-Rhyne University. Tipoff between the Bears and the Tornados inside Boshamer Gymnasium is set for 8 p.m.
