Winn and Roper named Sports Spot Student-Athletes of the MonthFebruary 3, 2010
Brevard, N.C. - Samantha Winn and Josh Roper have been named the Sports Spot Brevard College Student-Athletes of the Month for the month of January as recognized on WSQL 1240 AM on Wednesday afternoon. The award is presented by Sports Spot in conjunction with the Brevard College Athletic Department.
Winn, a senior forward on the women’s basketball team, reached double figures in seven of the nine games the Tornados played in the month, recording a double-double on January 2nd with 24 points and 16 rebounds against Mars Hill. She led all Brevard College scorers with 15.0 points per game and 6.9 rebounds per game during the stretch. Winn also contributed six assists, 12 steals and one blocked shot in the month of January and currently sits among the South Atlantic Conference leaders in several major categories, including points per game, field goal percentage and rebounding.
Roper, a junior guard on the men’s basketball team, achieved double-figures in nine of the 10 contests the Tornados played this season in helping lead the team to an 8-2 record in the month. Roper was able to break 20 points in five of the 10 games, tying the Brevard College single game scoring record at Wingate on January 16th with 33 points, before breaking it with 41 in the Tornados triple overtime win over Erskine on January 18th. For the month, Roper averaged 20.6 points, 4.4 assists and 2.3 steals per game, while also pulling down 5.2 rebounds per contest. The Charlotte, N.C. native is among the South Atlantic Conference leaders in points, assists, steals and rebounds.
These two athletes will be presented with certificates and action pictures recognizing their award, which will be displayed in the lobby of Boshamer Gymnasium for the entire school year. A total of five female and male Sports Spot Student-Athletes of the Month will be selected in the 2009-10 academic year. The award is selected from qualified candidates each month by the athletic department staff.
