Tornados and Winn dominate in 81-74 victory

Winn scores 31, pulls down 11 rebounds

Brevard, N.C. - The Tornados defeated Lincoln Memorial University Saturday afternoon, 81-74, led by Samantha Winn’s 31 points and 11 rebounds, her fifth double double of the year. Dayshalee Salaman was one of four Railsplitters to reach double digit scoring figures scoring 19 to lead LMU.

The Tornados improve to 8-13 overall and 2-9 in the conference, while LMU falls to 7-14 overall and 4-7 in the conference.
As a team, Brevard shot 57.7 percent from the field. Holli Flippo scored 13 for the Tornados shooting three of four from the field and a perfect six of six from the foul line, followed by Amber Roberts with 12, as she shot four of five from the field and three of four from 3-point range.

Brevard dominated the first half, shooting 63 percent from the field and 54 percent from 3-point range. Winn scored 17 of her 31 in the first, converting sixty percent of her shots including two three pointers. Amberly O’Dell scored all of her 11 points in the first half to lead the Railsplitters.

The Tornados led by ten through the first ten minutes, as Winn scored eleven holding off LMU to eventually take a 17 point lead later in the half. With under four minutes remaining in the first, Carolyn Mills and Amberly O’Dell made back to back 3-pointers sparking LMU on a 11-2 run to end the half down 43-29.

Brevard saw their biggest lead of the game early in the second, up by 19, but LMU improved their shooting in the second half with help from Salaman who scored 15 of her 19 points in the second half, and Mills who came alive to score 14 of her 17 in the second.

The Railsplitters outscored the Tornados 45-38 in the second half, and came within three points as the two minute mark approached led by Mills’ shooting.

 Flippo converted all of her six foul shots within the last minute of play to help seal the Brevard victory.

Asheley Watkins, who also led the team with five assists, blocked what would have been a chip shot by LMU, allowing Brevard to keep momentum and  take an eight point lead before ultimately topping the Railsplitters, 81-74.

The Tornados return to action in a week when Wingate travels to Brevard for a 2:00 p.m. game. The Tornados will also host PinkZone for Breast Cancer Awareness and will be collecting donations for the Kay Yow Foundation.
