Chick Martin Tribute set for February 26thFebruary 8, 2010
Brevard, N.C. - The Brevard College Athletic Department will be hosting the Chick Martin Tribute on February 26th as the Tornados recognize former Brevard College basketball coach Leighton "Chick" Martin as we honor his lasting impact on the players and students at Brevard College.
Chick Martin is a living legend at Brevard College, having served from 1955-1972 in running a program of excellence as athletic director, chairman of the department of health and physical education and head coach of the men’s basketball team. Martin also served as the Director of the National Junior College Athletic Association for 10 years and was President of the Western North Carolinas Junior College Athletic Association, before retiring as the winningest coach in the history of Brevard College basketball with 240 wins and four conference championship titles. A member of the Brevard College Hall of Fame, the Brevard College Alumni Honor Roll and a former member of the Western North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame Committee, Chick Martin’s legacy lives on through the countless lives he impacted both on and off the court.
Kicking off the Challenge is the Chick Martin Tribute in celebration of the legacy of Chick Martin on Friday, February 26th, at 6 p.m. in Boshamer Gymnasium as the evening will launch the Chick Martin Challenge which is a drive for the funding of the state-of-the-art Chick Martin Training Center, as well as renaming the floor of Boshamer Gymnasium in honor of Chick Martin. The evening will feature heavy hors d’oeuvres, beverages and entertainment and costs $35 per person with the attire of the evening smart casual.
The second day of the two-day event will feature the Men’s Basketball Alumni Day, which will start with a $12 luncheon served in the Reserve Dining Room inside Myers Dining Hall, and following the Brevard College men’s and women’s basketball games against Catawba College in the afternoon, the Alumni Day will include a 3-on-3 Alumni Basketball Tournament, Foul Shot Competition, 3-point Shot Competitions and much more.
