Box Score

Brevard, N.C.-Left fielder Kellen Moman went three for four with a home run and three RBI but Mars Hill used an eight-run top of the ninth to defeat Brevard 12-4 on Friday afternoon at Gil Coan Field.

Jacob White made his third start of the season and went seven innings while giving up four runs on eight hits. He struck out three Lion hitters and threw 124 pitches.

The Lions (3-2, 1-0) posted two runs in the top of the first. Matthew Kitt led off with a walk and stole second base. Devin Presnell then reached on a throwing error by Matthew Pruitt allowing Kitt to score. A one out single from Adam Lewis through the right side drove in Presnell to stake Mars Hill to an early 2-0 lead.

The Lions added a run in the top of the third while Brevard countered with two runs in the bottom half. Pruitt led off the frame with a single to center. With two outs and Pruitt at second, after a wild pitch Moman drove a 2-2 pitch over the right center field fence to bring BC within one run.

Mars Hill added grabbed a 4-2 lead in the fifth inning thanks to a Rusty Smith double down the left field line and an Adam Lewis RBI single up the middle.

Brevard (0-3, 0-1) fought back in the bottom half of the seventh, scoring two runs off new Lions hurler Joseph Keel. Moman and Ronald Patterson hit consecutive doubles, with Patterson taking an 0-2 pitch down the left field line to drive in the Tornado’s left field. An M.A. Dozier sacrifice bunt advanced Patterson to third. Matt Ennis drew a walk and freshman Eric Renegar tied the game with an RBI sacrifice fly to right field.

Neither team scored in the eighth inning but Mars Hill broke things open in the final frame. Rusty Smith hit what proved to be the game winning home run off of Jacob Koontz on a 1-1 pitch. Tommy Yearty came in relief of Koontz and walked Patrick Davidson intentionally to load the bases. A bases loaded walk to Dalton Hardee drove in another run. Michael Kitt’s double added two more. The Lions finished with 8 runs on 5 hits in the inning.

Brevard went down in order in the ninth. Ryan Potter pitched six innings for Mars Hill and won his first game of the season.

The teams meet tomorrow afternoon for a doubleheader, with first pitch of game one scheduled for 12 p.m.
