Tornados gunned down
Tusculum 78, Brevard 55
Brevard, N.C. - Holli Flippo, Lindsay Brendle, and Amanda Whitaker each scored nine for the Tornados Saturday afternoon, but were unable stop Tusculum’s Jasmine Gunn who scored 27 points as Tornados fell 78-55.
Tusculum improves to 16-9 and 9-6 in the SAC, while Brevard falls to 8-16 and 2-12 in the SAC.
Gunn led the Pioneers with seven assists, and five steals while turning the ball over just once.
Gunn also shot 85 percent from the free throw line (11-13), as Tusculum had 30 free throw attempts to the Tornados’ 16 attempts.
Catherine Hintz followed Gunn in scoring with 17 points for the Pioneers, and also led the team with three blocks.
Brevard scoring was spread among ten players. Samantha Winn scored eight, shooting three of nine from the field, and led the team with six rebounds.
The Pioneers came out of the gate 5-0 through the first three minutes of play. Roberts and Winn hit back to back three pointers to take the team’s first lead of the game at the 16:56 mark. Brevard’s only other lead in the game came at the 13:28 mark.
Whitaker and Roberts led the team in the first half with seven points each as the Tornados went into the half down, 34-27.
Tusculum outscored Brevard in the second half, 44-28, as they shot 14 of 16 from the free throw line. Gunn scored 15 of her 27 points in the second half alone, while Brendle and Flippo led Brevard in the second with six points.
All of Flippo’s nine points were three pointers, while five of Brendle’s nine points were from the foul line.
Brevard will return home to take on Newberry on Wednesday, at 6:00 p.m.
