Tornados split with North GreenvilleFebruary 23, 2010
Brevard, N.C. - The Tornados defeated North Greenville in the front half of the doubleheader, 4-2, led by Martika Elmore’s 12 strike outs, and RBI’s from Kristina Clayton and Chelsi Mallory, but were then turned away in the second game 5-3 despite a late rally by the Tornados.
The Tornados are now 2-6 on the year, while North Greenville fell for the first time with a 7-1 record.
Elmore picked up her first win of the year and tallied 14 strikes on day to total 38 on the early season, while improving her ERA to 3.03 in 30 innings.
Liz Houser was dealt the loss in the second game falling to 1-4.
Game 1: Brevard 4, North Greenville 2
North Greenville scored first after leading off the game with a Kansas Wofford double. Allison Bailey later drove her in with a single up the left side. Elmore kept the Crusaders’ at bay in the second inning striking out the side, for three of her 12 strikeouts in the first game.
Brevard had a big fifth inning, scoring three runs to take the lead.
Becca Curlee began the inning walking and then was sacrificed to second by pinch hitter, Nicole Heusel. Curlee then advanced to third on an infield hit by Sarah Carlos, and scored when Clayton doubled. Mallory kept the inning alive with a single through the right side, driving in both Carlos and Clayton.
North Greenville added one more run in the 6th inning when Allison Baily sacrificed Hope Brewer in from third after she tripled with one out.
Brevard added an insurance run in the sixth when Clayton drove in her second RBI of the game in the form of Michelle Turner who reached base on a double to left field.
Game 2: North Greenville 5, Brevard 3
Brevard had been down 4-0 when Jennifer Gift scored the first Tornados run of the second game in the bottom of the fourth on a Turner single.
Turner, whose diving catch in the top of the third held the Crusaders scoreless with a runner on and one out, went two for four on the day with an RBI, a run, and a timely walk to start the seventh.
Kathleen Crady pinch ran for Turner, advancing to third when Clayton doubled for her third hit of the day. Crady scored the next at bat when Kayla Dorsey doubled.
Mallory picked up her third RBI of the day when she grounded to second and Clayton scored. Taylor Roof recorded her third and final strike out of the day to halt the Tornados rally, and receive the win.
