Newberry tops Brevard 73-48
Brevard, N.C. - Samantha Winn scored 15 points Wednesday night, leading the team and surpassing Brevard’s scoring record with 1,514 career points. However, Newberry spoiled the evening, led by Anita Bulcher’s 19 point, 15 rebound, double double effort, topping Brevard, 73-48.
Brevard falls to 8-18 on the year and 2-13 in the conference, while Newberry improves to 18-7 and 11-4.
The Tornados led through the first three minutes of the game, outscoring Newberry 8-2 in the early going, led by Winn with a jumper and a three and Holli Flippo, who followed Winn on the score sheet with 12, with a three.
Newberry turned it up taking their largest lead of the half when Helen McKinney made a jumper as time expired, giving Newberry a 41-28 halftime lead.
McKinney and Bulcher led the Scarlet and Gray in the first half with eleven points a piece, while Flippo shot three of four from beyond the arc to lead the Tornados, along with Winn, with nine points each.
Newberry continued to dominate into the second half, holding the Tornados to just two points in the first seven minutes, and outscoring them 7-2.
Winn led the Tornados with six second half points, and broke the record on her last points of the evening when she made a layup at the 6:42 mark to break the record, formerly held by Holly Krogman with 1,513 career points.
Winn also led the team with nine rebounds as Newberry out rebounded Brevard, 50-23, a season low for the Tornados
The Tornados will return to action on Saturday when Catawba comes to Brevard for the last home game of the 2009-2010 season. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
