Hickory, N.C. - The Tornados ended their season in the quarter-final round of the SAC Tournament, falling to first seed, Lenoir-Rhyne. Lindsay Brendle scored 13 points to lead the Tornados, while Samantha Winn recorded her fifth double double of the year and the fourteenth of her career with ten rebounds and ten points, in the 69-48 loss Wednesday night.
The Tornados finish the season 9-19, and 3-14 against SAC opponents, while clinching the team’s first ever tournament berth. Lenoir-Rhyne won the regular season conference title, and will continue on in the tournament to play Tusculum.
Bittany Mitch led the Bears with 15 points, while pulling down seven rebounds and blocking four shots. Amber Holt followed on the scoring sheet with 14 points.
Nine of Brendle’s 13 came by way of the foul line, as she shot a perfect nine of nine to lead the Tornados to a 84 percent free throw percentage.
Brevard did their part on defense stealing the ball 11 times to the Bears eight, led by Holli Flippo with four steals, and Amanda Whitaker with three.
However, the Bears still led by as many as 21 points in the first half before taking a 19 point, 37-18 lead into the intermission, shooting 65 percent (13 of 20) from the field, to the Tornados 20 percent (5 of 25) in the first half.
Holt scored ten of her 14 points in the first half shooting, three for five from the field and three for four from the foul line.
Brendle scored five points in the first half to lead the Tornados.
The Tornados kept within 22 points of Lenoir-Rhyne through the first part of the second half. After a 13-0 run, the Bears took a 35 point lead, their biggest lead of the game, with 7:07 remaining.
Brevard battled back with nine unanswered points, sparked by a Brianna Worley 3-pointer at 6:03. Worley finished the game with 11 points, shooting three of four from 3-point range.
