Mullis homers twice, drives in five

Brevard, N.C. - The Brevard College baseball team defeated Milligan College 13-9 in nine innings Tuesday at Gil Coan Field. Brevard (5-13) scored five runs in both the first and third innings and Stephen Mullis homered twice as the Tornados snapped a three game losing streak.

The Buffaloes (8-8) put up single runs in each of the first two innings. Eric Oxley doubled to right field to plate Dustin Ford in the top of the first, and Dallas Crouch reached on an error in the second, and scored on Todd Caldwell’s RBI single.

Brevard scored five runs on four hits in the bottom of the first. With the bases loaded and the game tied at one, Kramer Clark doubled to center field to drive in Kellen Moman and Stephen Mullis. Matthew Pruitt followed with a two RBI double of his own, plating Clark and Jackie Corn. Pruitt went two for five in the game.

Eric Renegar hit a bases loaded single in the Brevard half of the third to drive in two. He was two for five with two runs scored and two RBI on the day. Mullis doubled down the left field line to drive in two more Tornados. Moman capped off the scoring with an RBI single to left to drive in Mullis.

Staked to an early 10-2 lead, Brevard starter Shane Galloway worked six innings and recorded his first win of the season. He allowed nine hits and seven runs (four earned), while striking out four.

In the fifth inning, Mullis hit the first of his two homers, driving a Josh Hullett pitch over the right field fence for a two-run blast. With two out and none on in the seventh Mullis lined a first pitch fastball from Frank Newcomb over the wall in right for his fourth home run of the season. Mullis finished the day going four for five with five RBI and four runs scored.

Joseph Lepore worked the final three innings to notch his first save of the year. He allowed two runs on four hits while striking out two.

Milligan’s LA Owens worked two and a third innings in taking the loss. He is 1-2 on the year. Brett Maddox was the big bat for the Buffaloes, going four for five with three RBI and scoring twice, including a two run home run in the ninth inning.

Milligan travels to Covenant College for a 2 p.m. first pitch Friday March 19. Brevard hosts Wingate Friday at 2 p.m. in the opener of a three-game South Atlantic Conference series.
