Brevard, N.C. – The Brevard College men’s soccer team opened up the 2008 season with the Belmont Abbey Crusaders on Friday afternoon, falling in a close game, 4-2.
The loss drops the Tornados to 0-1 on the young season, while the Crusaders start off the season 1-0.
Belmont Abbey scored first at the 28:12 mark after Max Pembleton of the Crusaders scored on a rebound shot off of goalkeeper Jerry Hatsady.
The Tornados quickly responded with a goal of their own before the game reached the 30 minute mark as Miika Kastarinen scored off a beautiful crossing pass by Henri Erti. The score would remain tied 1-1 at the half.
Seven minutes into the second half Pembleton added a second goal for the Crusaders, scoring off a header after a deflection from several players.
Not to be denied, Kastarinen tied the game up again at the 69:39 mark, this time unassisted from the left wing.
However, Belmont Abbey would not be denied as Logan Rhea put the Crusaders up for good with a goal off a low shot near the right post with the assist from Pembleton. With four minutes left in the game, Pembleton added an insurance goal, scoring off a crossing pass from teammate Fritz Belinga.
Kastarinen led the Torandos with two goals, while Pembleton from the Crusaders had three goals and an assist for the game.
Brevard will return to action on Sunday, August 31, as they travel to play Coker College at 4 p.m. in Hartsville, S.C. Belmont Abbey will also be on the road on August 31, playing at Tusculum in Greeneville, T.N. at 6 p.m.
