Brevard, N.C. - The Brevard College Tornados (5-16, 1-14) dropped both games of a Saturday doubleheader against Wingate (15-9, 11-4) at Gil Coan Field. Bulldogs starters Chris Nelson and Mark Rape each pitched complete game shutouts to lead Wingate to a three game series sweep. BC fell 2-0 in nine innings in game one and 9-0 in seven innings in game two,
Tornado starter Shane Galloway pitched well in game one despite taking the loss, going six and a third innings and allowing one earned run on six hits while striking out four. Galloway is now 1-1 this year. He set down the Bulldogs in order in the first, fourth, and fifth innings.
Nelson (3-0) went the distance, scattering three hits and striking out seven. He had five separate one-two-three innings and retired nine straight Tornado hitters from the fifth inning through the seventh.
Both teams were scoreless through the first six innings. Wingate designated hitter Tres Ramirez drew a full-count walk to leadoff the seventh. Center fielder Nick Siega-Riz moved Ramirez to second with a sacrifice bunt. Tripp Faulk entered the game to pinch run for Ramirez and Josh Sugg pinch hit for Taylor Honeycutt, singling the first pitch he saw to left field to drive in Faulk. Jacob Koontz replaced Galloway and retired the Bulldogs with no further damage.
Brevard threatened in the bottom of the inning, as Kramer Clark hit a one out single to right and later advanced to second on a wild pitch. Matthew Pruitt grounded out to the catcher with two outs to end the inning. Along with Clark, Stephen Mullis and M.A. Dozier got hits for Brevard in game one.
Chris Vazquez doubled with two outs in the ninth and was brought home on a Logan Isaacs RBI single up the middle to give Wingate an insurance run.
Brevard went down in order to end the game.
Game two turned on a six run Bulldog second inning. Wingate scored three unearned runs in the frame. Siega-Riz contributed an RBI single. Honeycutt and Isaacs added RBI doubles. The six run outburst chased Brevard starter Jacob White (0-5) from the game after an inning and two thirds.
Ramirez was three for four with a run scored and one driven in. Third baseman Jacob Karr went one for three with a run scored while driving in two. Honeycutt added two RBI and scored a run in four at bats.
Bulldog starter Mark Rape (1-1) picked up where Nelson left off in game one, pitching all seven innings, allowing just three hits while striking out seven and walking three.
Wingate scored single runs in each of the third, fourth, and seventh innings.
Darren Olivo, Kellen Moman, and Matthew Ennis notched hits for Brevard.
Wingate returns to the diamond Tuesday March 23 at home against West Virginia State at 7 p.m. The Tornados welcome Erskine to Gil Coan Field Tuesday at 2 p.m.
