TORNADOS FALL AT HOME TO ERSKINE

Corn hits fifth home run in loss

Brevard, N.C. - The Brevard College Baseball team (5-17) fell to 24th ranked Erskine College (24-7) 14-7 Tuesday afternoon at Gil Coan Field. The Tornados led five to two after two innings, but the Flying Fleet scored at least one run in seven of their nine turns at bat to sweep the season series over Brevard.

Down 1-0 in the bottom of the second Brevard scored three runs on four consecutive hits. Matthew Pruitt and Kellen Moman hit back to back singles. Ron Patterson followed with an RBI double to plate Pruitt. Matthew Ennis then laced a two RBI single to left field. Ennis finished the day two for three with two driven in.

The Tornados put two more across in the third inning. Stephen Mullis led off the frame with a five pitch walk and Jackie Corn took an 0-1 pitch from Tyler Jones over the left field fence for his fifth home run this year. Corn was two for four with two RBI and two runs scored.

Erskine plated three runs in each of the fourth and sixth innings. Right fielder Bryan Fogle went four for five with three runs scored and three driven in. He now has 60 RBI this season. Three of his hits were doubles. First basemen John Bolding was three for six with three RBI and two runs scored.

Trailing 9-6 in the bottom of the seventh Brevard scored their final run of the game on a Pruitt RBI double to plate Corn.

The Flying Fleet scored single runs in each of the seventh and eighth innings to take a 10-7 lead. Erskine added four insurance runs in the ninth on four hits and two Tornado errors. Fogle’s RBI single and Bolding’s two RBI double broke things open,

The Tornados had two on with one out in the ninth before Pruitt struck out looking and Moman fouled out to shortstop to end the game.

Ennis finished the day two for three with two driven in.

Jacob Koontz (0-2) worked six innings and allowed eight earned runs while striking out five. Derek Smith worked four innings of relief allowing one run on two hits and striking out five to improve to 3-0 this year.

Erskine travels to Tigerville, S.C. Wednesday March 24 for a doubleheader against North Greenville, with first pitch of game one scheduled for 1 p.m.

The Tornados go on the road for a twin bill against Virginia Intermont Wednesday. Game one will begin at 2 p.m.
