Five of the Tornados 11 games will be at home

Brevard, N.C. - Coach Paul Hamilton has released the Brevard College 2010 football schedule as announced by the BC Sport Information Department.

The Tornados will play an 11-game schedule, featuring five home contests, while the Tornados will be on the road six times.

Brevard finished the 2009 season with a 7-4 record in their second season as full members of the NCAA Division II and the South Atlantic Conference, receiving votes in the AFCA Division II poll for the first time as a program. The Tornados were also recognized by Somis Sports as the 11th most improved Division II Football team in 2009 and the 40th most improved program across all levels of NCAA Collegiate Football.

Brevard opens the 2010 campaign at home on August 28th, hosting Edward Waters College. This will be the second meeting between the teams, with the Tornados winning the first game down in Jacksonville, Fla. last season, 51-6.

The Tornados begin their first of three straight road games, traveling down to Boiling Springs, N.C. on September 4th to take on FCS Big South opponent Gardner-Webb University.

After an open week, the Tornados continue on the road, traveling to Charlotte, N.C. to take on Johnson C. Smith University. Kickoff between the teams is scheduled for September 18th, at Irwin Belk Complex/Memorial Stadium and will be the first time the two teams have met. The Golden Bulls finished 3-7 last season, 2-5 in CIAA action, defeating common opponent Edward Waters, 27-14, while falling to Chowan 33-20.

Brevard finishes the trip in Buena Vista, Va. against Southern Virginia. Last season marked the first time the teams met and the Tornados topped the Knights in Asheville, 42-7, behind the combined 16 tackles and three interceptions by rising juniors and 2009 All-SAC selections Michael Gist and Prince Simunyu.

Brevard opens South Atlantic Conference play on October 2nd, hosting Family Weekend against Carson-Newman. The Eagles went undefeated in conference play last season on their way to the Division II Football Semifinals.

The Tornados return to the road the following week against Catawba College, traveling to take on the Indians in Salisbury, N.C. Last season, Brevard defeated Catawba on Homecoming Weekend, overcoming the Indians as Richard Ray picked up a blocked punt and rumbled into the end zone to give the Tornados a 7-6 victory.

Brevard heads home for a pair of games against Lenoir-Rhyne on October 16th and Wingate on October 23rd.

The Tornados picked up their first SAC win since joining the conference in last season’s matchup against the Bears, defeating Lenoir-Rhyne, 14-9 after Gist returned an interception 20 yards for a touchdown. The Tornados will be having their Homecoming Game against Wingate, in hopes of avenging their first loss of the 2009 season at the hands of the Bulldogs.

The Tornados return to the road, traveling to Greeneville, Tenn. to take on Tusculum on October 30th in a rematch of last season’s overtime contest at Brevard Memorial Stadium. Tusculum scored first in the extra period on a 20-yard field goal, but the Tornados pulled out the 27-24 win as Eric Watts caught a pass from Michael Crumbaker and strolled into the end zone to split the series with the Pioneers at 1-1.

Newberry College is the Tornados Senior Day opponent as the teams’ face-off on the first weekend of November.

The Tornados finish up the 2010 regular season on the road at Mars Hill on November 13th.
