Brevard, N.C. - Becca Curlee went four for five with five RBI, leading the way for the Tornados as they split a doubleheader with Tusculum, Wednesday afternoon. Brevard defeated the Pioneers 9-0 in five innings and then fell 4-1 in the second game.
The Tornados remain even in the conference with a 3-3 SAC record, and are 14-15 overall. Tusculum is now 8-14 overall, and 2-6 in the conference.
Game 1: Brevard 9, Tusculum 0
The Tornados used a five run first inning and a four run third, led by Curlee’s four RBI performance, to defeat the Pioneers in five innings.
Pitcher, Martika Elmore improved to 11-7, shutting down the Pioneers and allowing two hits in three innings of work.
The Tornados’ offense spurred early in the first inning when Nicole Heusel led off the game with single to right field, followed by a Kristina Clayton bunt single. A Maddie Fletcher single set the table for Brittany Jones who singled through the right side driving in both Heusel and Clayton with the bases loaded.
With the bases still loaded, Tusculum pitcher, Holli Cadenhead balked, allowing all runners to advance a base, and Jones to score. The batter Becca Curlee then cleared the bases with a single to centerfield and then advanced to second on the throw to the plate as both Jennifer Gift and Sarah Carlos scored on the play.
The Tornados added on to their 5-0 lead in the third inning, sparked by a Fletcher leadoff single, and a Jones double to centerfield. With two outs, Curlee drove in two more runs on a double to left center.
After Ashley Wilson came into to replace Cadenhead, Kayla Dorsey drove Curlee in from second on a single through the left side. Heusel who went two for three on the day, followed with a double to drive in Dorsey.
Liz Houser replaced Elmore in the fourth inning, and kept the shutout intact allowing just two hits to secure the Tornado victory.
Game 2: Tusculum 4, Brevard 1
Brevard totaled seven hits, led by Curlee and Chelsi Mallory who each went two for three in the game, but only managed to cross the plate once in the 4-1 loss.
The Tornados led 1-0 after Curlee drove in Gift for her fifth RBI of the day, and the Tornados’ only run of the game.
Phlyscia Powell’s fifth inning shot off of Liz Houser, got the Pioneers on the board and gave them the 3-1 advantage over Brevard. Tusculum charged Gift with their forth and final run in the following inning when Katy Stuckwish and Kristin Cantrell hit back to back doubles.
Curlee added another extra base hit in the seventh inning with two outs, but was left on base when Erin Searcy ended the game for the Pioneers and improved her record to 3-6.
The Tornados are back in action on Friday when they travel to Mars Hill to battle another SAC opponent, and will travel to Cleveland, Ga. for a non-conference doubleheader against Thomas University on Saturday.
