Anderson, S.C. – The Brevard College women’s soccer team hit the road for the first time this season on Wednesday night, as the Tornados fell to the Trojans of Anderson University 3-1 in Anderson, S.C.
The loss drops the Tornados to 1-1 on the season, while Anderson moves to 1-0 on the year.
With all of the scoring coming in the first half of play, the Trojans were able to hold off the Tornados down the stretch in what proved to be a close game from start to finish.
Anderson got on the board first early in the opening frame, as Virginia Cates scored on a penalty kick in the ninth minute to put the home team up on top 1-0.
However, the Tornados bounced back to score a goal of their own in the 17th minute of the first half when freshman Bailey Varley scored on a shot 20 yards out from the right side to tie the score up at 1-1.
However, the next two goals came by way of the Trojans as Cates scored her second goal of the game at the 24:44 mark of the first half, putting a shot past the Tornados goalkeeper Sydney Douglas from in front of the net, putting Anderson up 2-1. Larissa Fedorowich got the assist as she set up Cates on what turned out to be the game winning goal.
In the 39th minute of the first half, Catherine Thomas added an insurance goal from 18 yards out on the right wing to put the Trojans ahead 3-1 heading into the half.
That is how the score would remain for the final 45 minutes of play, as neither team was able to push the ball across the goal line and into the back of the net in the second half.
For the match, the Trojans outshot the Tornados 14-12. Four of the Tornados 12 shots were on goal.
The Tornados will return to action on Saturday, September 6, when BC will play host to Coker College at 2 p.m. Anderson University will play at Lander University at 1 p.m.
