Newberry, S.C. - Kramer Clark hit his fourth home run of the season and the Tornados held leads in both games but the Brevard College baseball team lost twice to Newberry College Saturday at the Smith Road Complex. Newberry scored 10 runs in the fourth inning of game one on the way to a 16-4 win and took game two 5-4 in nine innings.
Newberry improves to 16-30 this year and 4-20 in South Atlantic Conference play. Brevard falls to 8-34 and 2-22 in the SAC.
Brevard scored four runs on five hits in the third inning of game one to take an early 4-2 lead. Jackie Corn hit a bases loaded single down the left field line to drive in Eric Renegar and Derek Ham. Kellen Moman followed with a double to right field that brought home Stephen Mullis. Brett Brinson added an infield hit to plate Corn.
The Scarlet and Gray scored 10 runs on nine hits in the bottom of the fourth. Sanchez Gartman led off the inning with a triple to right center and later scored on a Hunter Cox double down the right field line. Cox had two RBI doubles in the inning. Chris Love hit an RBI double to right and Scott Horvath hit a two-run home run to left center.
Horvath went five for five with three RBI and three runs scored in game one. Gartman finished four for five with an RBI and three runs scored.
Mullis went two for three with a double and a run scored in the opener. Brinson also had two hits in game one.
Dale Bennett went the distance for Newberry, allowing four runs, two earned, on 11 hits while striking out four and walking none. He earned his third win of the season.
Jacob White pitched three and a third innings and took the loss for Brevard.
Brevard played small ball to strike first in game two as Renegar led off the game with a single through the left side, reached third on a Clark sacrifice bunt, and scored on a sacrifice fly from Mullis.
Newberry scored single runs in both the first and second innings but Brevard tacked on two runs in the third to reclaim the lead 3-2.
Renegar again got things started with a one out single through the left side then Clark took an 0-1 pitch over the left center field fence.
Newberry answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Andy Vogel led hit a leadoff single through the right side and scored on Gartman’s double to right center. Gartman came home on an RBI bunt single from Horvath.
Brevard tied the game at four as Mullis and Moman hit consecutive doubles in the top of the sixth.
Terrence Gray reached on a dropped pop fly to lead off the Newberry ninth and advanced to second base. He got to third on a John Fogarlie sacrifice bunt. The Tornados issued intentional walks to Gartman and Love. Horvath hit a walk-off bunt single to the pitcher to plate Gray.
Renegar and Mullis had two hits apiece for Brevard.
Horvath had four more hits in game two to finish nine for ten in the twinbill.
Matthew Pruitt started and pitched five and a third innings. He allowed four runs on 10 hits, struck out four and walked two. He did not factor in the decision. Josh Case pitched three plus innings of relief and lost his second game of the season.
Wayne Potts started and pitched five innings for Newberry. He gave up four runs on six hits, struck out three and walked one but got no decision. Gary Hersey pitched four scoreless innings of relief and gave up two hits to win his second game of the season.
Newberry next faces Benedict Monday April 19 at 7 p.m. Brevard concludes its season with a doubleheader at King College Tuesday April 20. Game one is scheduled for 2 p.m.
