DUE WEST, S.C. - The Tornados of Brevard College took and early lead but could not hold on for the victory, falling 2-1 to the Erskine College Flying Fleet Wednesday evening in men’s soccer action. The Tornados fall to 0-2-1, while Erskine improves to 2-1.
Brevard wasted little time in striking first. In the 5th minute, Ian Townson sent a ball into the box from the left side of the pitch which Miika Kasterinen banged home to give the Tornados and early 1-nil lead. The goal is Kasterinen’s third of the young season, but unfortunately, it was the only time Juan Mascaro’s team would score on the evening.
The Tornados would hold their one-goal advantage into the half, but Erskine would tie things up in the 68th minute. Erskine’s Eric Maxley took things into his own hands, scoring an unassisted goal to even the score at one.
The deciding goal came just four minutes later. John Michael Leppert scored on an assist from Kyle Bennett to give the Flying Fleet a 2-1 lead they would not relinquish.
BC keeper Jerry Hatsady made five saves while allowing the two goals. Erskine’s Ronnie Murray allowed one goal while making three saves.
Brevard continues their quest for a victory on Saturday when they travel to NAIA foe Warren Wilson College for a 2 p.m. showdown. Erskine plays again next Wednesday, Sept. 10, when they host North Georgia College & State University.
