Johnson City, Tenn. - The Brevard College Cycling team began its national title defense on Saturday, August 28, at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tenn. Tristan Cowie took the Men’s A Cross Country title in the two-day event to lead the Tornados cyclists.
The two-day race consisted of the Short Track Cross Country race, Mountain Cross race and Downhill race on Saturday, with the Cross Country event occurring on Sunday.
In the Short Track race, Cowie led the men’s team in Group A, finishing fifth overall behind Bradford Perley of Lees-McRae, while Scott Hoffner also finished in the top 10 overall, coming in ninth. Matt St. Marie finished 15th overall, while Lewis Gaffney rounded out the group in 21st.
In the Women’s A Group, Caroline Decosimo was the lone Brevard cyclist, finishing fourth overall in the event to Ashley James of Appalachian State.
Thomas Bagnal led the Tornados in the Men’s A Group in the Mountain Cross event, finishing 10th overall, while James Chaput and St. Marie each finished inside the top 20. Park Baker came in 25th overall to round out the group. Newcomers Asher Blackmore and Heath Wilson led the Tornados in the Men’s B Group, as Blackmore recorded a top-five finish behind Lindsay Wilson’s Chase Hines, while Wilson finished 12th overall in the event. Kyle Stallings was the lone BC rider in the C Group, finishing sixth.
Newcomer Kate Weisenfluh and Caroline Decosimo represented Brevard in the Women’s A Group in the Mountain Cross, finishing third and fourth, behind Lindsay Wilson’s Madison Pitts.
Baker led Brevard in the downhill event, finishing sixth overall in the A Group, leading Chaput, Bagnal and St. Marie as the trio finished 11th, 12th and 13th. Blackmore finished in the top five again in the Men’s B Group, coming in second behind ETSU’s Joey Leahy, while Wilson finished eighth. Stallings rounded out the BC men on the first day, finishing fourth in the C group.
Weisenfluh and Decosimo led the Tornados in the Women’s A Group in the downhill, finishing second and eighth respectively.
Cowie led off Sunday with his victory in Cross Country, finishing with a time of 2:08:33. Hoffner joined Cowie in the top five, finishing fifth overall, while Lewis Gaffney also recorded a top 10 finish. Kody Adams and St. Marie also took to the field, finishing 27th and 30th overall.
On the Women’s A side, Caroline Decosimo finished fourth overall with a time of 1:49:00.
The Tornados continue the 2010 fall mountain bike season on Saturday, September 11th in Banner Elk, N.C. at Lees-McRae College.
