Due West, S.C. – The Brevard College women’s soccer team opened their season on the road at Erskine College with a bang taking the match 5-3 Thursday evening.
Despite falling behind 1-0 in the first 25 seconds the Tornados were able to rally and match the Flying Fleet’s early goal in the first half. Brevard piled on four more first half goals to edge out Erskine.
Freshman, Elena Crowe (Candler, N.C.) nodded up the match when she scored her first collegiate goal which sparked an offensive whirlwind by the Tornados. Sophomore, Allie Hovis (Charlotte, N.C.) gave Brevard a 2-1 lead when she found the back of the net, but it was junior forward, Bailey Varley (Concord, N.C.) who put the match out of reach by netting three goals in the final seven minutes of the first half. It was Varley’s second hat-trick of her career, her first came last season on September 1, 2009 when she scored three against Lees-McRae College.
Brevard’s freshman goalkeeper, Crissy Moran (Franklin County, Va.) was the starter for the Tornados and she kept seven of 10 shots from crossing the goaline. Moran also picked up her first collegiate win.
The Tornados outshot the Flying Fleet 17-10, as well as edging them 4-2 in corner kicks.
Brevard’s women’s soccer team takes the field at home for the first time on Sunday, September 5 when they welcome the Belmont Abbey Crusaders. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
