Spartanburg, S.C. - Coach Brenda Skeffington recorded her 500th career victory as the Tornados survived a season-opener five-set thriller over host Converse College, 25-14, 25-15, 18-25, 29-31, 15-13.
With the win, Brevard opens the 2010 volleyball season 1-0, while Converse falls to 0-1.
Highlights from the Tornados first match include freshman Kortney Conner leading the attack with 20 kills, while sophomore setter Bethany Stevenson added 35 set assists.
Defensively, the Tornados recorded 16 team blocks in the match with freshman Erin Rollins leading the way with six, while junior Jordei Osby and sophomore Jamie Atkinson recorded four apiece. Libero Rebecca Schoonover led all Tornados with 16 digs in the five sets.
The Tornados continue on the road this weekend as they head to Montreat, N.C. on Saturday, September 4th, to take part in the Volley in the Mountains tournament held at Montreat College. The Tornados will take part in three scheduled matches with the first one scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. in McAlister Gymnasium.
