Spartanburg, S.C. - The Brevard College Cross Country Team raced at the Eye Opener Invitational Saturday September 4 in Spartanburg, S.C. The Tornados competed against runners from over 20 different institutions at Milliken Research Park.
The Brevard women’s team placed 18th in the 22-team field. Angela Canale posted the best time for the Tornados in the Women’s 5000-meter run, completing the course in 20 minutes and 30 seconds, giving her a 57th place finish in the 185-Woman field. The freshman averaged 6:36 per mile. Melissa Schmidt followed at 23:13, while Ariel Muiselaar crossed the line in 23:52. Danielle Messer put in a time of 24:04. Grace Skiles crossed the finish line at 25:14 and Liza Fortenberry finished at 32:46. USC Upstate’s Joan Tangwar won the race in 18:02. The 49ers of UNC-Charlotte won the team competition.
The BC men placed 17th in the 21-team meet. Freshman Jordan Tager ran the fastest for Brevard in the Men’s 8,000-Meter Race. The freshman averaged 5:50 per mile on the way to a 29:00 finish to place 93rd in the 188-man field. Skip Allsoop ran for 29:28 and a 108th place result. Junior Jon Lavelle followed in at 29:39 to finish in 111th. Erik Gibbs crossed in 30:04. Christopher Shelton turned in a 32:34 time. Chris Shore posted a 32:58 finish. Tiffen Tapia covered the course in 33:52 and Jourdane Landry came in at 37:56. Gilbert Kemboi of USC Upstate won the race at 24:13. The Furman Paladins took the team title.
