Brevard, N.C. - The Brevard College men’s soccer team squared off with Conference Carolinas opponent Mount Olive College on Sunday afternoon. Despite taking an early 1-0 lead the Tornados weren’t able to hold onto the win as Mount Olive scored in the final minute to tie the match 1-1, which held up as the final tally.
The Tornados (0-2-1) were flying out of the gate and scored on their third shot of the game when Jami Uuttu (Naantali, Finland) netted one at the 11:08 mark on his fifth shot of the season. It was Uuttu’s first goal and Jaime Villacis (Miami, Fl.) set up the freshman with his first assist of the season.
The Tornados continued to fight through the first half and held onto their lead heading into the second half and things seemed to be on the up-and-up until just under one minute left in play.
Mount Olive was awarded a free kick following a Brevard College foul with just 42 seconds left in regulation time and John Mendoza put one out of reach of Jack Shaw (Simpsonville, S.C.) to tie up the game at one goal a piece.
The Tornados and Trojans headed into overtime all nodded up. In the first overtime there were just two shots taken and both were by the Trojans. The Tornados took two shots in the second and final overtime period but were unable to net one leaving the score tied at one goal.
Shaw played the entire 110 minutes in goal for Brevard. He was faced with 19 shots, nine on goal and saved eight of them.
Offensively, the Tornados took 12 shots and put five of them on-target. A dual-effort by two Mount Olive goalkeepers kept the Tornados out of the net all but one time.
The men’s team will head to UNC-Asheville on Wednesday, September 8th to face-off with Bulldogs in an afternoon contest. Game time is set for 4 p.m. at Greenwood Soccer Field.
