Brevard, N.C. – In the 2008 home opener in the newly renovated Boshamer Gymnasium, the Brevard College women’s volleyball team dominated from start to finish, defeating Coker College in three sets 25-16, 25-18 and 25-23.
With the win the Tornados move to 4-1 on the year, while Coker falls to 1-5 for the season.
The Tornados, who never trailed in the match, traded points with the Cobras in set one before a kill by freshman Jordei Osby gave BC a 6-5 lead that they would not relinquish.
BC pushed their lead to as high as 12 at 24-16 when fellow freshman Ashlie Morrison picked up a service ace to win set one, 25-16.
In set two Brevard took the lead 1-0 and never looked back, pushing their lead to 16-9 on a kill by sophomore hitter Brooke Seaman.
Yet the Cobras did not go away, as Coker cut the lead to four at 18-14 before the Tornados finished the set out with a 6-4 run to win the set 25-18 on a service ace by junior Cori Emory, putting BC up 2-0.
Set three was a set of runs as the Tornados jumped out to a 10-5 lead before Coker came fighting back to knot the score up at 10-10.
The two teams would tie the score up three more times before BC took a 22-21 lead late in the set on kill by Chelsey Trojan. At match point, the Tornados looked to pre-season all-SAC second team selection Brooke Seaman pounded an attack into the gym floor to give BC the 25-23 win.
For the match, the Tornados were led by setter Jami Perry who dished out 19 assists and recorded six kills. Seaman added a team-high seven kills, while Trojan and sophomore Kirstan Carlson had four kills apiece.
Newcomers Chelsea Larsen and Osby added two and three kills, respectively.
The Tornados had 10 service aces for the match led by Trojan’s three.
Coker College was led by Kristin Teets, who had 10 kills and one block assist. Fellow outside hitter Cynallyhia Indriago posted seven kills for the match to go along with her seven digs. Libero Kelsey Carlson had 11 digs over the three-set match.
Both the Tornados and Coker College will be in action again tomorrow, as the two squads will compete in day two of the BC Volleyball Tournament. The Coker Cobras will play Columbia College at noon and Virginia Intermont at 4 p.m. Brevard will play Virginia Intermont at 2 p.m. and will wrap up the tournament with a contest versus Columbia College at 6 p.m.
