Jamie Bundy used a penalty kick in the final five minutes to give Brevard their second win

Brevard, N.C. - The women’s soccer team of Brevard College hosted the Valkyries of Converse College in a non-conference match on Wednesday evening. The Tornados used two second half goals to defeat Converse by a score of 2-1.

Despite starting the second half trailing 1-0 the Tornados were able to rally on to down the Valkyries and pick up their second win of the season.

It was in the 30th minute of play that Converse College put one past freshman keeper Brittany Webster (Stafford, Va.). It took the Valkyries four shots and three saves to finally put one by Webster. Although they took eight shots, six on goal in the first half the Tornados were unable to beat the Converse keeper and Brevard trailed 1-0 at the half.

In the second half the Tornados took seven shots before freshman Laura Smith (Leavenworth, Kan.) netted one in the 81st minute of play to tie the match at one goal a piece. Bailey Varley (Concord, N.C.) came up with the assist.

Just under five minutes later, Brevard was awarded a penalty shot after Converse College defender, Hilary Parkin committed a foul in the goal box. Freshman Jamie Bundy (Platte City, Mo.) took the penalty kick and fired a shot right by the Valkyries’ keeper to take a 2-1 lead which proved to be enough for the win.

Freshman Crissy Moran (Franklin County, Va.) started the second half in net for Brevard. She made two saves, while Webster stopped three while in net.

The Tornados outshot Converse 17-9 and were took six corner kicks while the Valkyries took just two.

The women’s team will head to Morrow, Georgia on Saturday to square off with the Clayton State Lakers. Kick-off is set for 5 p.m. at Laker Field.
