Spartanburg, S.C. – Both the Brevard College men’s and women’s cross country teams opened up their 2008 season on Saturday, as both teams competed in the 2008 Eye Opener meet in Spartanburg, S.C.
On the women’s side, the Tornados finished 18th overall and were led by senior Alycia Andrade. Andrade turned in a time of 20:10 for the 5K event, placing her 65th overall and ninth-overall for NCAA Division II participants.
Freshman Brittany Radenbaugh crossed the line with a time of 22:41, which was good enough for a 152nd-place finish in her first collegiate meet.
Junior Hannah Beck crossed the line at 24:55, while fellow classmate Meghan Grimes finished with a time of 26:16.
Senior Kristen Zerressen turned in a time of 29:58, while fellow senior Susan Morgan rounded out the scoring for BC with a time of 31:49.
In the men’s 8K event, the Tornados scored a total of 527 which was 20th-place overall out of 22 teams, holding of Toccoa Falls and Paine.
BC was led by freshman Jon Lavelle, who finished with a tie of 31:13, good enough for 168th overall.
Sophomore Tiffen Tapia finished with a time of 32:19, just ahead of teammates Zach Hazen and Damon Martin who crossed the finish line with times of 32:26 and 32:28, respectively.
Rounding out the scoring for Brevard was freshman Ryan Forsyth who turned in a time of 38:07 for the event.
Both the men’s and women’s teams will compete again next Saturday, September 13, when they will participate in the Wingate Invitational in Wingate, N.C.
