Brevard, N.C. - Kortney Conner led the Tornados with 11 kills on Wednesday evening and Rebecca Schoonover had a season-high 22 digs, but Brevard College fell in four sets to the visiting Crusaders, 17-25, 25-21, 25-13, 25-16.
Brevard (2-8) hit 40.0 percent in the first set and were led on the evening by Conner as the freshman outside hitter connected on 28.0 percent of her attacks. Jordei Osby added nine kills and Erin Rollins and Jamie Atkinson each contributed six to the Tornados attack. Bethany Stevenson led the way with a match-high 36 set assists, while Cassie Smatana and Sydney Yeomans each had a service ace.
Defensively, Schoonover led all players with 22 digs, while Yeomans contributed eight and Smatana added seven to the effort. At the net, Osby contributed a match-high four total blocks, while Rollins and Stevenson each had two.
Angela Jubb led visiting Belmont Abbey (9-4) with 12 kills on the evening as the Crusaders hit 21.6 percent as a team. Bria James added nine kills to the effort, while Lydia Schellenberg and Remick Tiller each had eight. Kay Schellenberg led the team with 32 set assists in the match and completed the double-double with 11 digs. James added 18 digs to the Crusaders’ effort, while Julianne Pisano had 14 digs.
The Tornados and Crusaders were tied through the first 22 points of the match at 11, before a Belmont Abbey attack error gave Brevard a lead it would not relinquish throughout the remainder of the opening set. The Tornados went on an 8-2 run as Osby, Rollins and Atkinson each had kills to put Brevard up 19-13. Belmont Abbey went on a run to cut the lead back to 20-16, but Brevard rallied on Smatana’s serve before a kill by Conner ended the first set in Brevard’s favor.
The Tornados opened up the second set by going up 15-10 as five different players recorded kills on their way to the lead. The Crusaders battled back, typing up the match at 17, before using the momentum built on the comeback to close out the set with the 25-21 victory on Kay Schellenberg’s kill.
Belmont Abbey jumped out to leads in both the third and the final set to close out the match.
Brevard is back in action on Friday, September 24th, as they host Catawba College in Boshamer Gymnasium. First serve for the match between the Tornados and the Indians is set for 6:30 p.m.
